Laser Light Therapy versus Hair Transplants

Many dermatologists and hair loss treatment facilities in Chapel Hill rely on laser light therapy to help patients revitalize and restore lost hair. At Koher Medical, we are proponents of laser light therapy as an additive treatment, but the results of laser light therapy do not match the results of a full hair transplant. Below, we’ve compared and contrasted laser light therapy for hair loss and hair transplants.

Category Laser Light Therapy Hair Transplant
Description The scalp is exposed to low-level lasers to stimulate hair follicles Hair from thicker areas of the patient’s head is transplanted to balding/thinning areas to even out the hair on the head, creating a fully natural, restored head of hair
Process Patients undergo several treatments over a few weeks to a few months Hair loss resistant hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head and implanted into the areas affected by hair loss
Effectiveness Can improve hair density and strength, but it is best left as a supplementary treatment Results are permanent as hair transplants are the most effective hair loss solution
Ideal Candidates Patients experiencing early stages of hair loss may prolong the hair loss by doing laser light therapy Individuals with sufficient donor hair (hair on the back of the head) and have clear hairline receding or thinning/balding
Maintenance Needed Treatments are needed periodically indefinitely to maintain the results The surgery is performed in one day and no further maintenance is required as the results are permanent
Long Term Results Results are temporary and treatments must be done continually in order to achieve results A natural, full head of hair is the permanent result of a hair transplant

About Dr. Koher

How Hair Transplants Work

Hair transplants are a permanent, natural solution to hair loss. They work via a simple, three-step process.

Hairline Planning & Design

During the consultation process, we calculate the number of grafts (clusters of hair follicles) needed to achieve the optimal results for the hair transplant. We also determine the density and direction the follicles should be placed to blend seamlessly with existing hair.

Donor Hair Extraction

When the procedure begins, our surgical team extracts grafts from the donor area, which is typically the back of the head. The reason the back of the head is the donor area is the hair follicles there are naturally resistant to hair loss, which allows for the transplanted hair to resist falling out.

Donor Hair Implantation

Once the hairs are extracted, we implant the hair into the areas affected by hair loss. Our team expertly places the grafts to match the density and direction of the existing hair. After 12 months, the hair will be fully grown and indistinguishable from the existing hair.

Unique Pricing Table
Description Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Method of Extraction A strip of hair is extracted from the donor area Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area
Hair Length in Donor Area Hair around the donor area remains the same length Best for those wishing to wear their hair short

Scarring May leave a linear scar in the donor area No visible scarring after the procedure
For both procedures, the implant process to the affected area is the same.

Other Procedures

We offer a variety of non surgical hair restoration procedures and treatments to those who are not ready for a surgery.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma is found in a patient’s blood and when injected into the scalp, it will revitalize and thicken hair that is thinning or beginning to fall out. After a simple blood draw, we spin the blood in a centrifuge to extract the PRP. We mix the PRP with a local anesthetic before injecting it into the head.

We recommend four treatments over a six-month period, and most patients see thicker and healthier hair in 2-4 months.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

SMP procedures involve injecting specialized ink in the form of thousands of tiny dots into the scalp in order to create the illusion of thickness and density. Our specialists are professionals in ensuring the SMP is practically undetectable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively non intrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
