Neograft Transplants versus Koher Medical FUE Hair Transplants

While there are a number of clinics offering FUE hair transplants in the Charlotte area, many of these clinics perform FUE hair transplants using a Neograft machine. Neograft machines, and similar devices, are used to automate the hair transplant process. All Koher Medical FUE Hair transplants are performed manually for the highest quality hair restoration. Below we have outlined some differences between other clinic’s and Koher Medical’s approach.

Category Charlotte Clinics using Neograft Koher Medical
Precision and Control A Neograft machine does not allow for the operator to control the extraction and implantation of follicles as precisely In FUE procedures, our doctors manually extract individual follicles for exact placement
Physician Experience Neograft machines often allow for less experienced physicians to perform FUE procedures, short cutting the process Led by Dr. Grant Koher, a Founding Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, our team holds over 100 years of combined experience
Graft Health A Neograft machine’s automated suction may damage certain grafts, leading to less consistent results Manual FUE allows for the delicate transfer of individual follicles, ensuring each graft is healthy and of the highest quality
Post Extraction Scalp Health The punch size a Neograft machine makes in the scalp is generally larger than those done manually, potentially causing scarring Experienced physicians, like those employed at Koher Medical, can achieve punch sizes between 0.8-0.7mm, avoiding visible scarring
Results Due to a limited amount of precision, a Neograft transplant may result in a less natural looking hairline Manual FUE allows our doctors to precisely craft a pristine, natural looking hairline

Ideal Candidates for FUE

The ideal candidates for FUE:

  • Have significant hair thinning or hair loss in the crown or hairline areas
  • Can provide donor hair from the back or side of the hair
  • Wish to wear their hair short (less than 2 inches) following the procedure

Understanding the FUE Procedure

FUE procedures follow a simple, three-step process designed to restore your hairline or bald spots to a full, thick head of hair.

Hairline Planning & Design

At the beginning of the consultation process, we will examine your current hair loss and design a new hairline. We ensure your restored hairline will appear natural and healthy, considering the thickness of existing hair, the pattern and direction of your hair growth, and how many grafts the procedure will require.

Donor Hair Extraction

The FUE procedure itself begins by extracting individual follicles from the donor area. A donor site at the back or sides of the head is shaved down and used for extraction, as these follicles are more resistant to hair loss. Unlike an FUT procedure, this process will not leave any linear scarring, preserving the natural appearance of the donor site.

Donor Hair Implantation

The final step of the procedure is the implantation of the donor hair in line with the hairline design. In placing the extracted follicles, our team takes care to make sure the donor and preexisting hair is blended together, resulting in a natural, thick head of hair.

Selecting Number of Grafts

Dr. Koher Has Performed Surgeries Up to 4,500 Grafts

Dr. Koher is the most experienced physician in the Carolinas and can perform any hair transplant procedure. However, we believe in using the least amount of grafts possible to achieve the desired results.

We Believe in Quality over Quantity

Many physicians will often perform more grafts to compensate for a lack of skill in hair restoration, sometimes reaching upwards of 3,000- 5,000 grafts. In reality, most patients will never require more than 2,500 grafts, as extensive extraction can permanently harm the donor area.

We believe in using the minimum number of required grafts to achieve the highest quality result. This protects the donor area, allowing for the possibility of a second procedure if that becomes necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively nonintrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
