Hair Restoration in Durham, NC

Many physicians in Durham who perform hair restoration procedures do not specialize in the procedures. This section highlights the risk of working with a Doctor who does not perform these procedures consistently.

A Lack of Specialization could Lead to Sub Optimal Results

The Raleigh-Durham area is home to many plastic surgeons or other cosmetic physicians who happen to perform hair restoration surgeries. Due to the artistry required to properly build a hairline, we highly recommend choosing a surgeon and surgical team that performs surgeries every single day. The hairline must be rebuilt with the proper density and pattern of hair growth to ensure the new hair growth matches with your existing hair.

Complications May Arise Causing Extra Scarring

If a surgeon is less familiar with the nuances of a hair transplant procedure, they may be more apt to make mistakes that lead to additional scarring in the patient’s donor area. In rarer cases, there may be infections or poor wound healing resulting from a non-specialist performing a hair transplant procedure.

Many Surgeons Do Not Use Donor Hair Efficiently

Additionally, if the surgeon is not experienced with hair transplants, it could lead to an inefficient use of donor hair. Because donor hair is a finite resource, it must be used efficiently to rebuild your hairline or crown. Inefficiently using donor hair also limits options for future procedures if they become necessary.

One Size Fits All Solutions Are Common

When surgical teams are not experts in the field of hair restoration, it can lead them to perform every procedure the same way every time, forcing a one-size-fits-all solution onto all patients. This practice can lead to unsatisfactory outcomes, especially over time.

Unrealistic Expectations are Set

Many doctors provide unrealistic timelines to see full results to sell more patients on hair transplants. No matter which doctor performs the procedure, it will take 12 – 18 months to see full results. We have included more information on expected results further down the page.

Improper Procedures Lead to Higher Financial Costs

If the procedure is not performed by an expert, you may have to pay for another procedure after 5-7 years to correct what went wrong. It is a more sound financial decision to go with a specialist upfront.

At Koher Medical, we have performed over 20,000 procedures and are experts in all things hair restoration. Please see below for our results and more information about our procedures.

How Hair Transplants Work

If you are looking for the fastest, most effective hair restoration treatment, then a hair restoration procedure is probably for you. Hair transplants involve transferring hair from the back of the head, or donor area, to the areas affected by hair loss. Most people observe that the back of the head is the least common area to experience hair loss, and this is because that hair is mostly immune from male and female pattern hair loss. By moving some of that hair around the head, we ensure hair all over the head can withstand hair loss.

The two types of hair transplants are Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplant.

Comparing FUE & FUT

Comparing FUE & FUT

Follicular Unit Transplant procedures are also known as “the strip method”. With this procedure, we extract a strip of donor hair from the back of the head. Then, the edges are sutured back together with a multilayer closure technique to ensure minimal scarring occurs.

This transplant procedure is recommended for patients who do not want to shave the back of their head, as the hair around the donor area remains the same length.

One of our two primary hair transplant methods is called Follicular Unit Extraction. This procedure is less invasive than a FUT (follicular unit transplant) procedure, but your head must be shaved in the back to perform this procedure. However, there will be no linear scarring with this procedure, making it a great choice for those who wear their head short.

This procedure is recommended for patients who wish to wear a shorter hairstyle due to the lack of noticeable scarring.

For both procedures, the implant process to the affected area is the same.

Other Hair Restoration Procedures & Treatments

We offer a variety of non surgical hair restoration procedures and treatments to those who are not ready for a surgery.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP procedures involve injecting a patient’s own growth factors and body nutrients into their hair follicles. Following a simple blood draw, we separate the plasma-rich platelets from the blood in a centrifuge. Then, the plasma is injected into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles.

This procedure stimulates tissues to regenerate and multiply, thereby reversing the hair loss process.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

In an SMP procedure, we implant specialized ink into the scalp, darkening the head and giving the illusion of hair thickness. We use micro-fine needles to create thousands of tiny dots across thinning and bald areas, creating a density effect.

We recommend three types of medications for hair loss.

Oral Finasteride

Finasteride is FDA approved to treat male pattern hair loss, and has been proven to be effective with genetic pattern hair loss. It is very safe and effective for men with few potential side effects.

Topical Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a foam treatment used to treat male and female pattern hair loss. It is applied directly to the scalp twice per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively non intrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
