Ideal Candidates for FUE

The ideal candidates for FUE:

  • Have significant hair thinning or hair loss in the crown or hairline areas
  • Can provide donor hair from the back or side of the hair
  • Wish to wear their hair short (less than 2 inches) following the procedure

Understanding the FUE Procedure

FUE procedures follow a simple, three-step process designed to restore your hairline or bald spots to a full, thick head of hair.

Hairline Planning & Design

Prior the procedure during the consultation process, we will assess your hair loss intensity and design a new hair line. We take into account the thickness of the surrounding hair, hair growth patterns, and facial features to ensure a natural looking outcome. This planning process influences the number of grafts needed.

Donor Hair Extraction

The first step of the FUE procedure is the extraction of the donor hair. Donor hair is extracted individually, unlike in a strip as with an FUT (follicular unit transplant). Each unit extraction causes minimal discomfort. For an FUE procedure, the back of the head is shaved around the donor area, but the donor extraction process results in no linear scarring after the procedure, preserving the natural appearance of the donor site.

Donor Hair Implantation

Lastly, the extracted follicular units are implanted into the recipient area. We expertly implant the hair to match the natural growth direction of the hair and the thickness of the surrounding hair. The result is a seamless, natural looking result blending perfectly with the patient’s existing hair.

Selecting Number of Grafts

Dr. Koher Has Performed Surgeries Up to 4,500 Grafts

Dr. Koher is the most experienced physician in the Carolinas and can perform any hair transplant procedure. However, we believe in using the least amount of grafts possible to achieve the desired results.

We Believe in Quality over Quantity

Many physicians tell patients they need 3,000 – 5,000 grafts due to their lack of skill in hair transplant procedures. Most people will never need more than 2,500 grafts, and using more can permanently destroy the donor area.

Our approach is to use the minimum amount of grafts possible to achieve the desired results. This leaves plenty of donor hair for many people to have a second procedure later in life if it becomes necessary.

Choosing Between FUE & FUT

There are some key differences between FUE and FUT procedures, and both are the right option for different people. Use the table below to view the basic differences between FUE & FUT.

Pricing Table
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
A strip of hair is extracted from the donor area Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area
Hair around the donor area remains the same length Best for those wishing to wear their hair short
No shaving of the back of the head is required No visible scarring after the procedure
For both procedures, the implant process to the affected area is the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively nonintrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
