Hair Transplant Cost per Graft by Procedure Type & Expertise of Surgeon

Hair Transplant Cost per Graft by Procedure Type & Expertise of Surgeon

Many potential hair transplant patients are unsure what they should be paying per graft. Many factors determine a fair price, such as the doctor’s expertise, clinic location, and case size. In this article, we will give you fair prices per graft by procedure type, doctor’s expertise, case size, and clinic location.

While some people may be tempted to seek out a cheaper option for their hair transplant by visiting a generalist cosmetic surgeon or traveling to Turkey, we highly recommend choosing only a doctor who is a Fellow in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery or a Diplomate to the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery due to the skill, training, and expertise required to achieve that level of membership.

Cost per Graft by Procedure Type & Doctor Expertise

The following table gives a fair cost per graft for both FUE and FUT broken down by doctor expertise.

Procedure TypeLow Expertise DoctorIntermediate Expertise DoctorExpert Doctor
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)$3 – $5 per graft$4 – $6 per graft$6 – $10 per graft
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)$2 – $4 per graft$3 – $5 per graft$5 – $8 per graft

Generally, we recommend only choosing an expert doctor because they will not overharvest the donor area, which removes the possibility of a future procedure if one ever becomes necessary for hair loss or thinning on a different part of the head. We see this commonly and rarely do patients need more than 1,500-2,000 grafts if the doctor and surgical team are skilled at implanting the grafts to match the density and direction of the existing hair.

Many people choose to travel out of the United States to Turkey or other countries because of the cheaper procedures. These procedures are the equivalent of a low-expertise doctor here, and we commonly see doctors over harvesting in order to produce a fast, yet unsustainable result. The tables below give the price ranges for surgeries with average graft counts of 1,500 and 2,000, which are the two most common case sizes that we perform here at Koher Medical.

Total Procedure Price Using an Average Graft Count of 1,500

Procedure TypeLow Expertise DoctorIntermediate Expertise DoctorExpert Doctor
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)$4,500 – $7,500$6,000 – $9,000 $9,000 – $15,000
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)$3,000 – $6,000$4,500 – $7,500 $7,500 – $12,000

Total Procedure Price Using an Average Graft Count of 2,000

Procedure TypeLow Expertise DoctorIntermediate Expertise DoctorExpert Doctor
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)$6,000 – $10,000$8,000 – $12,000 $12,000 – $20,000
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)$4,000 – $8,000$6,000 – $10,000 $10,000 – $16,000

A Note on Neograft: Many doctors with low and intermediate expertise will be using a Neograft machine, which is a machine that automates the hair transplant procedure. In this case, the doctor is not performing the procedure, rather they are subcontracting the work to Neograft technicians who travel in for the procedure. We recommend avoiding Neograft providers and traveling to a true hair transplant clinic to ensure your procedure meets your expectations.
