Hair Transplant Methodology: Other Clinics Versus Koher Medical

The Triad area of North Carolina is home to several hair transplant providers, but none as experienced as Koher Medical. We focus on achieving the desired results while using the smallest amount of grafts (implanted hairs) possible because using a high number of grafts can cause permanent damage to the head. Many of the local clinics in the Triad will recommend a high number of grafts, so this section will be dedicated to why a small number of grafts should be used.

Category Other Clinics Koher Medical
Graft Usage Large numbers of grafts are used due to the short term result potential, but long term results are put as risk The fewest number of grafts to achieve the optimal long term result are used
Donor Area Management Harvesting too many grafts risks permanent damage of the donor area, leading to limited or no possibility of a future procedure Prevents over-harvesting to avoid permanent damage to the donor area and preserve the possibility of future procedures
Scalp Health Compromised by aggressive usage, risking slower healing and potential inflections or complications Minimizing trauma to maintain natural flora and scalp health is prioritized, reducing infection risks and maintaining scalp health
Sustainability Use of too many grafts can lead to unsustainable scalp health and diminished long-term outcomes Ensures long-term viability of both donor and recipient by opting to perform a second, smaller procedure if needed later
Risk of Complications Increased risk of complications due to the larger number of grafts used, which can lead to a longer and harder recovery Fewer grafts used mean lower chances of scarring, poor healing, and swelling, leading to easier recovery
Skill Requirement Many surgeons recommend more grafts due to lack of skill in achieving the desired results with a more conservative number Achieving the desired results with a smaller graft count demands more expertise and precision in graft placement

About Dr. Koher

How Hair Transplants Work

Hair transplants are the fastest, most effective, and most permanent form of hair restoration. They are completed in a simple, three-step process.

Hairline Planning & Design

Part of what sets Koher Medical apart is our expert hairline planning and design. Our specialists design a new hairline for the patient that blends naturally with the existing hair and facial structure.

Donor Hair Extraction

During the procedure, grafts (hair follicles) are extracted from the donor area (typically the back of the head). These hair follicles are naturally resistant to hair loss, so when they are moved to areas with thinning hair, they will fill in the area permanently.

Donor Hair Implantation

Finally, the grafts are implanted into the head in accordance with the initial hairline plan. After ~12 months, the hair will be completely regrown and the thinning areas will be restored a thick, full head of hair.

Comparing FUT & FUE

Unique Pricing Table
Description Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Method of Extraction A strip of hair is extracted from the donor area Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area
Hair Length in Donor Area Hair around the donor area remains the same length Best for those wishing to wear their hair short
Shaving Requirement No shaving of the back of the head is required Shaving of the donor area is required
Scarring May leave a linear scar in the donor area No visible scarring after the procedure
For both procedures, the implant process to the affected area is the same.

Other Procedures

We offer a variety of non surgical hair restoration procedures and treatments to those who are not ready for a surgery.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

One of the most powerful tools to revitalize hair is the plasma-rich platelets found in the blood. During a PRP procedure, the patient’s blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the blood. The PRP is then injected into the head to stimulate the hair follicles to thicken and become healthier.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

SMP involves implanting specialized ink in the scalp to give the hair a darker and thicker appearance. Micro-fine needles create thousands of tiny dots, giving the patient the illusion of density on the head and near-instant results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively non intrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
