Topical Minoxidil | Koher Medical in High Point, NC

Minoxidil was the 1st FDA approved treatment for genetic pattern hair loss. It was initially introduced as an oral medication to treat hypertension. While taking the oral medication patients noticed increases in hair growth on their scalp and face. In 1988 the FDA approved topical minoxidil to treat male pattern hair loss years later they also approved the use for female patients as well.

Usage

We recommend both male and female patients use Minoxidil 5% foam. We encourage patient to use the foam twice daily, but once a day seems to be just as effective. There is also a topical solution, but we have found it to be a bit messy and can cause the scalp to look too oily.

Effectiveness

Minoxidil is an effective treatment to treat male and female pattern hair loss. It does have its limitations but works very well when hair loss is caught early. See the study results found in the Journal of the Academy of Dermatology. https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(03)03692-2/fulltext
