Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation is the gold standard for permanently restoring hair growth in a way that appears natural. For those who meet the requirements, hair transplants can be an efficient and long-lasting method to combat thinning and promote hair growth. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplant (FUT) are the two methods we employ when performing hair transplants procedures. While both methods can be highly successful, the type of surgery chosen depends on patient needs and hairstyle preferences.

Key differences between FUE and FUT procedures:

FUE

The follicular unit extraction method has become increasingly popular among patients who want to restore hair growth without a noticeable scar. For the procedure, individual bundles of hair are harvested in a diffuse pattern from areas unaffected by hair loss. This hair is then transplanted into thinning areas to restore a natural hair growth pattern. It can be a good option for those who wish to keep short hairstyles as there is no linear scar from the procedure.

FUT

The follicular unit transplant technique has long stood as the primary method for surgically restoring hair growth. It is a minimally invasive procedure that removes a thin strip of tissue from the back of the scalp in order to individually separate hair bundles under microscopes. The prepared hairs are then transplanted into areas affected by hair loss. While this procedure results in a linear scar, a trichophyctic closure technique is utilized to minimize its appearance. Hair that is slightly longer easily conceals evidence of the procedure.

Transplant Recovery and Results

A typical hair transplant surgery day takes six to eight hours to complete. The exact length and specifics of the procedure depend on the patient’s needs and the transpant method being used. In order to ensure patient comfort, a local anesthetic is utilized to numb the necessary areas; the medicine is similar to what you would find at a dentist’s office. A relaxed environment with options for entertainment and occasional breaks is there to ensure the experience goes as smoothly as possible.

After the procedure is complete, there may be minor discomfort along the areas of transplantation. Localized swelling, itchiness, and tenderness may be experienced following the surgery. Each patient is provided with post operative instructions regarding the appropriate aftercare of their new hair and donor areas. The typical healing process lasts about 1 week, with the first couple of days being the most crucial.

Initial results from the transplant are typically seen 90 days after the procedure. Follow up appointments are scheduled at 6 and 12 months to track your hair’s progress. In the majority of cases, full results are seen after 12 to 15 months of growth. Koher Medical has helped thousands of patients to restore hair growth and maintain their best looking hair. More Hair Restoration Options

While hair transplantation is a proven method of restoring hair growth, it is not the only treatment option we offer. There are a multitude of nonsurgical treatments that we utilize in primary and adjunctive roles in order to satisfy the preferences of our patients. Combination therapy is often utilized to combat the problem of hair loss from different angles to ensure regrowth and prevent future hair loss.

Laser light therapy is one method that uses near infrared light (NIR) to increase nutrient supply to hair follicles and stimulate collagen. Portable laser devices are now available for at home use. Topical solutions such as minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, are also offered to increase hair growth in affected areas. In addition to these external hair regrowth methods, hair loss medication is often prescribed to maximize results and prevent further loss from occuring.

Pricing and Financing

Patients often wonder about the cost of transplant procedures when looking into it as a treatment option. The cost is almost entirely dependent on the number of hairs being moved at one time, as well as the surgical method being performed (FUE vs. FUT) While there are common case sizes, the best way to determine the amount of grafts you need and resulting price is to schedule a free consultation to talk with one of our hair restoration experts directly.

Financing the transplant procedure is also an option. For short term financing, we often work with CareCredit, which offers up to 18 months of 0% financing upon approval. For long term financing, we work with Allegacy Federal Credit Union, which offers 72 month financing options.
