What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of tiny micro needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The procedure is designed to create the appearance of hair follicles and can be used to cover bald or thinning areas, create the look of a buzz cut, or camouflage scars.

The pigments used are specially formulated for the scalp and are designed to match the color of natural hair. The procedure is typically done in a series of 3 to 4 sessions and results can last for several years.. It's important to note that SMP is not a hair growth treatment: rather it's a cosmetic procedure that creates the illusion of density.

How is the procedure performed?

Once a patient has been properly consulted and cosmetic goals have been established, a series of procedures will be scheduled to achieve desired results. Typically, 3 to 4 sessions are needed to implant the amount of pigment necessary to create natural and lasting results. During the first session, a hairline will be drawn according to the patient’s desired look and boundaries will be set for the areas to be treated.

Once the design is set in place, the professional SMP technician will utilize a micropigmentation machine to deposit small amounts of pigment into the scalp. The pigments are deposited into the upper layer of the skin, mimicking the appearance of hair follicles. The procedure is usually done in small sections at a time, and the technician will work with you to create a natural-looking hairline and appropriate density for blending into natural hair.

The entire procedure can take one to several hours to complete, depending on the size of the area being treated and the desired look. After the procedure, the pigments will appear darker than the desired color, but they will fade to the final color within a few days. The healing process can vary depending on the individual, but generally, it takes about 3-7 days for the pigments to settle and any redness to subside.

Aftercare will include avoiding washing the area for several days, avoiding sun exposure, applying moisturizer, and being mindful of activity levels for the first week. Sessions are typically scheduled 2 to 4 weeks apart, with each session potentially varying in the amount of time necessary to complete it.

Can SMP be Combined with a Hair Transplant?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can be used in combination with hair transplantation to enhance the overall appearance of the treated area. SMP is often used after hair transplantation to provide a more natural-looking hairline, or to camouflage any scarring that may have occurred during the transplantation process. It can also help to make the hair look thicker as SMP creates the illusion of hair follicles.

Sometimes during a transplant. a patient will choose to focus on a specific area rather than the whole scalp. SMP may also be used to transition the appearance between transplanted and transplanted areas in order to create a more natural look. It is not a requirement for a hair transplant, but it is an option that some patients choose to enhance the final results of their hair transplant procedure(s).

Who are Good Candidates for SMP?

Both Men and Women can benefit from SMP procedures to enhance the look of their hair. The procedure can help to create the appearance of a fuller head of hair and can be used to camouflage scarring, burns, birthmarks, hair loss due to medical conditions, or simply to enhance the appearance of naturally thin hair.

Many recipients will opt to recreate the appearance of a buzzcut by having their hair shaved down, but SMP may also be used amongst naturally thinning hair to simply create denser looking hair. Patients wanting to prevent their scalp from showing through can utilize SMP for natural looking results, and those who have received a hair transplant may enhance their overall results with this procedure.
