Category Koher Medical Other Raleigh Clinics
Hair Extraction Punch Size In an FUE procedure, Koher Medical’s surgical team carefully extracts individual follicles using a micro-punch size of 0.7-0.8mm to minimize scarring and discomfort. Other clinics use a standard punch size of 1.0mm leading to more noticeable scars and longer recovery times.
Graft Count Average 1,500 - 2,000 grafts for natural-looking and dense results without negatively impacting the donor area, allowing for future procedures if needed. Using a high number of grafts and over-harvesting of donor hair compromises future transplant options.
Results The Koher Medical Method for FUE hair transplants leaves no visible scars and provides permanent hairline results. Lower experience levels and different techniques have a higher risk of visible scarring and low-quality results.
Founding Member and Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) Dr. Koher is one of only two hair transplant doctors in North Carolina with Fellow status in the ISHRS. Member or no ISHRS status indicates lower levels of experience, training, and less commitment to the highest standards of hair restoration.
Hair Restoration Surgery Certification (ABHRS) Dr. Koher is one of the first hair restoration doctors in the world to receive full certification in hair transplants. He continues to teach the Koher Medical Method to physicians worldwide. Uncertified care leads to varying quality and unpredictable FUE hair transplant results.

Ideal Candidates for FUE

The ideal candidates for FUE:

  • Experience hair loss or thinning in the crown or hairline
  • Seek a natural-looking hairline with increased hair density
  • Want minimal to no scarring and a quick recovery time
  • Prefer wearing shorter hairstyles (less than 2 inches)

Understanding the FUE Procedure

FUE procedures follow a simple, three-step process designed to restore your hairline or bald spots to a full, thick head of hair.

Hairline Planning & Design

During your free consultation, our team listens to your hairline goals, and design specialists craft your new hairline to create a natural-looking result. Our hairline design considers the density of your current hair, the natural pattern and direction of hair growth, and the number of grafts needed for the procedure.

Donor Hair Extraction

During the FUE procedure, hair follicles are extracted individually from the donor area, typically located at the back or sides of the head. These follicles are more resilient to hair loss, making them ideal for areas of thinning. FUE leaves no visible linear scars, unlike the FUT hair transplant method which extracts a strip of hair.

Donor Hair Implantation

In the final step, we carefully plant the donor hair to match your desired hairline. Our team ensures a blend of new hair with your existing hair to provide a natural and full-looking hairline.

Selecting Number of Grafts

Dr. Koher Has Performed Surgeries Up to 4,500 Grafts

With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Koher can perform any hair transplant procedure. Koher Medical’s goal is to use the least amount of grafts to achieve your desired results. Most of our patients need 1,500 to 2,000 grafts. Dr. Koher specializes in performing FUE hair transplants daily, and our team will tailor the number of grafts to meet your specific goals.

We Believe in Quality over Quantity

Some Raleigh hair transplant physicians recommend 3,000 to 5,000 grafts. However, excessive extraction can permanently harm the donor area. Instead, Koher Medical prioritizes quality over quantity, so we ensure each graft is strategically placed to create a natural appearance. This approach maximizes the longevity of the transplanted hair and preserves the donor area for potential future procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively nonintrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
