Hair Replacements vs Hair Transplants

Many “hair restoration providers” in Wilmington are utilizing nonsurgical hair systems such as Folligraft and Permagraft. These hair systems involve a type of membrane attached to the scalp with replacement hair another individual has donated implanted into the membrane. The solution is not natural, and donor hair may not match existing hair as closely as may be desirable. The following section distinguishes between the natural hair transplant procedures performed at Koher Medical versus the hair systems used at other Wilmington clinics.

Feature Hair Replacement Systems (Other Providers) Hair Transplants (Koher Medical)
Origin of Hair Uses donated hair from other individuals which may not perfectly match the patient’s natural hair Utilizes the patient’s natural hair, ensuring a completely natural look
Nature of Procedure Involves attaching a membrane to the scalp and implanting donor hair into it Hair follicles are directly implanted into the patient's scalp which behave exactly like their pre-existing hair
Maintenance Requires regular cleaning, detangling, adhesive maintenance, and can degrade over time Hair behaves like normal hair and requires no special care beyond regular hair care routines
Permanence Regular replacement and maintenance are necessary Due to the transplanted hair being resistant to hair loss, the procedure is considered permanent
Comfort and Side Effects Can cause discomfort, hot spots, itching, and other side effects due to the material and adhesive Minimizes discomfort and adverse reactions because the patient’s natural hair is used
Cost-Effectiveness Less economical in the long run due to ongoing costs for maintenance and replacement More cost-effective over time as the price is paid once for delivery of a lasting, permanent results

About Dr. Koher

How Hair Transplants Work

Hair transplants are the fastest and most effective permanent hair loss solution. The procedures are three simple steps.

Hairline Planning & Design

Prior to the hair transplant, our team identifies the number of grafts (clusters of hair follicles), spacing of the grafts, and direction of the hair in order to ensure the transplanted hair will blend with the existing hair. This process is critical, as we aim to use the fewest number of grafts possible to achieve this result.

Donor Hair Extraction

Based on whether the patient selected to have an FUE or FUT procedure, the extraction process will be different. What remains the same is the extraction is done manually to minimize scarring, agitation, and the recovery time post procedure.

Donor Hair Implantation

Once the donor hair has been extracted and prepared, it is implanted based on the hairline plan. We implant the hair to grow naturally with the existing hair, meaning most people will never be able to tell the patient had a procedure if they meet following the hair regrowth.

Comparing FUT & FUE

Unique Pricing Table
Description Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Method of Extraction A strip of hair is extracted from the donor area Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area
Hair Length in Donor Area Hair around the donor area remains the same length Best for those wishing to wear their hair short
Shaving Requirement No shaving of the back of the head is required Shaving of the donor area is required
Scarring May leave a linear scar in the donor area No visible scarring after the procedure
For both procedures, the implant process to the affected area is the same.

Other Procedures

We offer a variety of non surgical hair restoration procedures and treatments to those who are not ready for a surgery.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

A PRP procedure is the next best thing besides a hair transplant procedure. Blood is drawn from the patient in order to take advantage of the growth factors available within one’s own blood. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich plasma, which is then injected back into the patient’s head. This injection stimulates hair follicles to become healthier and thicker.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

In an SMP procedure, specialized ink is implanted in the scalp to give the hair a darker and thicker appearance. Micro-fine needles are used to expertly place thousands of tiny dots, giving the patient the illusion of density.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the procedure take?

Surgeries typically take 6-8 hours to complete, but this can vary by case size, hair type, and surgery type. There is an hour lunch break and we build in time for patient breaks.

Full recovery can take anywhere from 2-14 days. The surgeries are relatively non intrusive and most people only experience minor discomfort easily treatable with Advil or Tylenol.

Many of our patients can return to work the next day. For several days after the procedure, there may be swelling and redness on the head, which those working in customer-facing positions should remember.

We recommend not wearing a hat until the third day following the procedure.

You will notice new hair on your head in 3-4 months and experience full results in 12-18 months.

Most of our patients describe the surgery as mildly uncomfortable, not painful.
